Boiler Inspection Section

1.  What notification is required?

Before placing a new or re-located boiler in service, the installer must notify the State Boiler Inspection Section of the Division of Oil and Public Safety:

Before the installers of any boiler have boilers placed in service, they shall notify the section, which, within ten days or as soon thereafter as possible from the date of receiving such notification, shall send an inspector to examine said boilers to determine that the construction, material, bracing, fuel and fluid supply systems, control apparatus, combustion air and ventilating air, electric wiring, piping, and all other parts of such boilers are such as to assure the safety of the boilers.  [9-4-106(2) CO Revised Statutes]

2.  How does an installer notify the State Boiler Inspection Section?

(B)  Call the Boiler Inspection Section office:  303-318-8484 and ask for an application to be mailed to you.

Submit completed application to:

Colo. Dept. of Labor and Employment
Division of Oil & Public Safety
633 17th Street, Suite 500
Denver, CO 80202-3660

3.  Can I operate the boiler before it is inspected?

Yes, you may operate the boiler before the initial inspection is performed providing that you have notified the Division of the new installation.

4.  Can an insurance (special) inspector perform this inspection?

If you carry special boiler insurance, your insurance company’s inspector can inspect the boiler and authorize putting it into service.  Contact your insurance company to request this inspection.  However, a state inspector must also inspect the boiler before you can receive a Certificate of Inspection.

5.  How long does it take to receive the Certificate of Inspection?

In most cases, you will receive a Certificate of Inspection for a new or re-located boiler within one month of the inspection date.  This assumes that there are no violations requiring correction and that you pay the invoice on receipt.

Before you receive the Certificate, you will first receive from the Boiler Inspection Section an invoice covering the inspection and certificate fees.  If the inspector noted any code violation(s), you will also receive a Notice of Requirements itemizing any violations you must correct before receiving a Certificate.

Notify the State Boiler Inspection Section office if you do not receive an invoice within 2 weeks of the inspection date or if you have a special need to receive the Certificate of Inspection very quickly.  Please call (303) 318-8484.

6.  How much does the Certificate of Inspection cost?

$75 for a new boiler.  This includes $60 for the inspection by the state boiler inspector and $15 for issuance of the Certificate.   Click here for a complete fee schedule, including the costs of periodic inspections of existing boilers.
