Boiler Inspection Section

1.  How frequently must boilers be inspected?

Inspection frequencies are established by the Colorado Boiler and Pressure Vessel Rule, section 2-1.  Click here to view the complete rule.

  • A.  External inspection

Copper-tube boilers that are NOT located in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, jails or prisons shall receive an external inspection every 2 years.

All other boilers shall receive an external inspection every year, including copper tube boilers located in schools, nursing homes, hospitals, jails or prisons.

Gas direct-fired jacketed steam kettles shall receive an annual external inspection.  Indirect-fired jacketed steam kettles shall be inspected when the boiler providing steam to the kettle is inspected.

  •  B.  Internal inspection

Power boilers shall receive an internal inspection every 3 years, if construction permits.

All other boilers shall receive an internal inspection upon the request of the owner-user or at the discretion of the state or special (insurance) boiler inspector, if construction permits.

2.  Who performs the inspection?

A state boiler inspector performs the inspection unless you carry special boiler insurance.  If you do carry such insurance, an inspector employed by your insurance company performs the inspection.

3.  What should I do if an inspection is overdue and the Certificate of Inspection has expired?

If the inspection is more than two months past due, call the state Boiler Inspection Section’s office:  303-318-8484.  If you get voice mail, leave a message with your name and phone number.  Call the boiler program manager at 303-318-8481 if your call is not returned within 4 working hours.

4.  Can I continue to operate a boiler if the Certificate of Inspection has expired?

If you received a Certificate of Inspection after your most recent inspection, and the only reason you have no current Certificate of Inspection is because the current inspection is overdue, you may continue to operate the boiler.

5.  Can a state inspector perform the certificate inspection if I carry special boiler insurance?

A state inspector will not perform the certificate inspection of an insured boiler unless the certificate expired more than 60 days ago and the state boiler office has not received a current inspection report on the boiler.

6.  How long does it take to receive the Certificate of Inspection?

In most cases, you will receive the Certificate of Inspection within 4 - 6 weeks of the inspection date.  This assumes there are no violations requiring correction and that you pay the invoice promptly.

7.  How much does the Certificate of Inspection cost?

The fee for the Certificate of Inspection is $15.  In addition, there is an inspection fee whose amount depends on the type of boiler and who inspects it.  Click here for a complete list of inspection fees.

8.  Can I pay my invoice with a credit card or a purchase card?

No.  We accept checks or money orders made out to “Department of Labor”.
